How to Map Columns When Importing Contacts

What is column mapping?

When you import contacts from a CSV or Excel file, column mapping tells EmaReach which column in your file corresponds to which contact field (e.g. Email, First name, Company). Your file might use headers like "Email Address" or "E-mail"; mapping links those to EmaReach’s Email field so contacts are imported correctly.

Where mapping happens

After you upload a file in Contacts → Import, EmaReach shows a mapping step. You will see your file’s column names (from the first row) and a dropdown or list of EmaReach fields for each.

EmaReach contact fields

Common fields you can map to include:

• Email (required) — The contact’s email address.
• First name — First name.
• Last name — Last name.
• Company — Company name.
• Industry — Industry or vertical.
• Location — Location or region.

You do not have to map every field; only Email is required. Map only the columns you have and care about.

How to map

1. For Email, choose the column that contains email addresses (e.g. "Email", "E-mail", "Email Address"). This mapping is required.
2. For First name, select the column with first names, or leave unmapped if you don’t have it.
3. Repeat for Last name, Company, Industry, Location as needed.
4. If your file has columns that don’t match any EmaReach field, leave them unmapped; they won’t be imported.
5. Double-check that Email is correct—wrong mapping can cause imports to fail or create bad data.
6. Continue to the next step (e.g. choose list, then Import).

Tips

• Use the example CSV on the import page to see recommended column names.
• Headers are usually taken from the first row; ensure the first row contains column names, not data.
• If you map the same file column to more than one EmaReach field, the last mapping usually wins; keep each field mapped to at most one column.
